b   maltech were engaged by Architects Bramhall and Blenkharn to design the structural elements for the prize-winning* visitor centre at Scampston Hall - an 18th century Regency country house in North Yorkshire.

The new building complements and contrasts with the newly restored traditional walled garden. The building’s lightweight steel frame supports a double sawtooth rooflight arrangement that floods the interior with natural light. The long glazed café elevation is openable for the summer months. Only the eastern end of the building is cavity brick wall; the rear wall needed only to be a light steel frame

due to its proximity to the existing grade II listed wall with which it runs in parallel. A lead flashing bridges the 150 mm gap between the two.

Inside the building the precision engineered steelwork is on view with the finely detailed connections.

Since opening in 2004 the café in the visitor centre has become a well respected restaurant**. It’s also a place where people pay to enjoy the ambience of a fine building in a delightful setting.

* Bramhall & Blenkharn won  Brick Awards “Best Refurbishment Project 2004”
** The Star at Scampston mentioned in the Good Food Guide
