maltech turned history detectives recently when we were asked to survey Rowntrees Wharf in the centre of York. Built in 1896, this impressive Grade 2 listed building was originally a flour warehouse known as Leetham Mill.

Before beginning the full structural inspection we had the fascinating task of cross-referencing all the historical design data, including the Victorian drawings of the original architect, W G Penty. The building had been constructed with massive external walls featuring circular cast iron columns to hold up the floors. The survey concluded with an inspection of the roof and turret, which afforded wonderful views of the York cityscape.
