maltech aided local entrepreneur and Councilor Lindsay Burr to convert the former dance hall known as Coronation Rooms to a Hairdressing Academy fit for the 21st Century.

The derelict Coronation Rooms in Commercial Street, Norton were in a pretty poor condition - more of a pigeon loft than a dance hall – and the fabric of the buildings was becoming increasingly fragile and unstable. Now after a major refurbishment the nineteenth century façade has remained intact whilst the interior is in the contemporary industrial style.

This architect designed teaching space is practical and efficient - and it definitely has the wow factor!

The ground floor has a ceiling of metal decking (supplied by Wards of Sherburn) which is supported by elegant steel lattice beams. On the first floor the steel trusses which support the roof are visible. These were designed by maltech and manufactured by R J Stead both of whom using the latest technology and methods. By contrast the roof was reconstructed using traditional methods and the original slates.

The picture shows the new trusses being hoisted by crane onto the first floor.
