maltech was approached by York Architects DWA on behalf of their clients a company which manages & owns several residential homes. One of their newly acquired homes is situated on the outskirts of York in a Grade II listed manor house. The house had been extended in the 1970’s, but now needed to be updated to meet modern building regulations and expected standards of comfort.

The fact that part of the house is Grade II listed and therefore to be protected from alteration as far as possible was not the only problem.

There were no “as built” plans available but plenty of evidence of structural defects. There were roosting bats in the roof which meant that there was only a short time in which the roof could be surveyed or worked on. Also the residents’ wellbeing had to be considered; all works had to be phased in order to minimise disruption.

maltech were initially asked to provide a Structural Design but took a larger and more general role. As well as specifying solutions maltech oversaw their implementation.

maltech has continued its relationship with DWA and the care company and has been asked to carry out further projects for both parties.
